Ruben Guzman

Independent media artist, curator and photographer.

His audiovisual production, which has won numerous international awards, has been showcased at major festivals and solo and group exhibitions, with highlights including a retrospective at the Mar del Plata International Film Festival and exhibitions at Clermont-Ferrand, BAFICI, IDFA, Oberhausen, Anthology Film Archives, Videoex, Thessaloniki, CCCB, and Cinematheque Ontario, among others.

Amelina "Coca" San Martín grew up in a remote Patagonian location inside the volcanic caldera of an extinct supervolcano, rich in archaeological and paleontological remains. Her humble life passes by amidst her world-famous archaeological collection, her cats, her fish and her beloved "choikes" (rheas).

Innocent Veronica, caught in the middle, is treated to both services! Meanwhile poor, dithering, cowardly Guy can only stand by and watch.

500 years later, this experimental film focuses on America's colonizations: by the predominant naval forces in Europe (1492) and the "American" economical-political-cultural colonization (1950s on).
The imposition of power upon cultures and their subsequent subjugation: the collapse of the "unfit".

Experimental documentary of Rocco ("Rocky") Gramuglia's barber shop.
Located at 2052 Commercial Dr., Vancouver, it constituted one of the last strongholds of an old ritual, now close to extinction.

(Rocco Gramuglia passed away in 1991, at the age of 73, a few months after the video was completed. The "Imperial" died along with him.)

Entirely edited in-camera, this 2-minute video is about light and visual perception, as it explores the medium of video itself.
